On Friday, September 5th, families, community members and the media are invited to celebrate the grand opening of the Family First Centre located at Rycroft School. The event will begin with a ‘Meet the Staff’ pancake breakfast at 9:00 a.m., followed by the official grand opening at 10:00 a.m., and an open house until 2:00 pm.
“The Family First Centre developed from discussions between members of the Rycroft School/Spirit River Regional Academy School Community Team (SCT) concerning the lack of resources in the area. The new Centre is located within Rycroft School and will be open during school days from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.,” says Rycroft School Principal Casey Brown.
“The Centre will provide access to information and resources to support our families. We invite students, parents and community members from Rycroft and the surrounding communities serviced by PWSD’s northern schools to drop by and discover information on education, parenting, Alberta Health Services, and area activities. The Centre will provide a casual atmosphere to meet and chat over coffee, read a book, or use the treadmill or computer. The space will also be used to host school-related meetings, as well as sessions provided by outside agencies. There will be a small fee for meetings hosted by non-educational groups,” adds Principal Brown.
In June, the school hosted a garage sale at the local Tags store. Local residents were invited to donate gently used items to the sale, with proceeds used to purchase equipment and supplies to get the Centre up and running. “We’re a small school in a rural community, but when a need presents itself, our families really pull together,” says Principal Brown.
