PWSD schools celebrate National Aboriginal Day

October 10, 2018

Two schools in Peace Wapiti Public School Division (PWSD) will celebrate National Aboriginal Day on June 21.

At Teepee Creek School, classes have been researching, planning and creating projects about various Aboriginal groups in Canada in anticipation of the school's first Learning Fair, to be held in conjunction with National Aboriginal Day. The fair will run from 2:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. in the school gymnasium on Tuesday, June 21. Families are invited to attend the event which will feature student presentations on topics about Aboriginal communities.

At Hythe Regional School, celebrations will begin at 10:30 a.m. with an opening ceremony, followed by a full slate of activities throughout the day. Grades 1-9 students will enjoy bannock on a stick, face painting, hand games, storytelling, jigging, and craft-making. A lunch of stew and bannock will be served. The event will close with a drummer, and all in attendance will be invited to participate in a round dance.

Many PWSD schools opted for an early celebration of National Aboriginal Day during PWSD's second annual First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) school tour, held on May 30-June 8, with special guest Sheryl Sewepagaham, music educator and award-winning musician.
