Peace Wapiti Academy goes digital – Grade 9 students and teachers to participate in upcoming personal device conference

October 10, 2018

More than 110 Grade 9 students and 10 teachers will participate in a Google Apps mini-conference at Peace Wapiti Academy (PWA) on Tuesday, October 21. The event will be led by Jen Clevette, an Assistant Principal at PWA.

“Students will follow the regular bell schedule, but instead of going to classes, they will rotate through five Google Apps for Education (GAFE) sessions,” says Ms. Clevette.

During the event, students and teachers will learn the ins and outs of Google Extensions, Gmail, Google Drive, Google Apps and Google Sites, along with a care and maintenance session entitled Care and Feeding of your Chromebook. The sessions will be facilitated by 2Learn, Peace Wapiti Public School Division’s (PWSD) Education Technologist, and lead technology teachers.

Ms. Clevette says the idea for this event came from the teachers’ desire to learn alongside the students.

“This year, Google Chromebooks were included in PWA’s Grade 9 registration, at no additional cost, with the expectation that the device will be at school and ready to use for as long as they are enroled at PWA,” adds Ms. Clevette. “This is a pilot project to see how teaching and learning changes. We have three goals for this project: provide equitable access to technology, increased ownership of learning, and increased student engagement in learning.”

The mini-conference event supports the goals of PWSD’s Personal Device Project which will eventually see digital devices in the hands of all students and incorporated into all learning situations.
