World Teachers' Day is Monday, October 5, 2020 – an opportunity to express our awareness, understanding and appreciation for the vital contribution teachers make to education and development.
Peace Wapiti Public School Division (PWPSD) joins with more than 170 countries around the world in celebrating World Teachers' Day. We employ the full-time equivalent of 375 teachers who make a difference in the lives of approximately 5,800 students in our 36 schools.
This year, World Teachers' Day celebrates teachers with the theme "Teachers: Leading in crisis, reimagining the future".
In March of this year, our teachers were quick to make the transition to at-home learning, finding creative new ways to connect with students while continuing to deliver lesson plans and meet curriculum requirements. In September, our teachers welcomed students back to familiar classrooms, where they play an important role in prioritizing student safety by adhering to the current public health measures.
The Canadian Teachers' Federation website provides the history of World Teachers' Day. In 1994, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) inaugurated October 5 as World Teachers' Day to commemorate the joint UNESCO and International Labour Organization's (ILO) signing of the Recommendations Concerning the Status of Teachers.
