Could you disconnect from technology for a week? Register for the #DisconnectChallenge by December 20, 2019. The students in the video below shared their experiences.
How it works:
- During the #DisconnectChallenge week, avoid social media platforms, viewing screens at night, technology around the dinner table, Internet browsing (except for schoolwork), texting (except for communicating with parents/guardians) and listening to music with headphones.
- Week 1, Feb. 10-16, 2020: Document and reflect on your personal media use.
- Week 2, Feb. 17-21, 2020, including Family Day: Engage in a media fast.
About the challenge:
The Alberta Teachers' Association, in partnership with Canada's eQuality Project, and researchers from the University of Ottawa, have launched the world's largest #DisconnectChallenge in Alberta.
This is a self-directed activity where Alberta teachers, parents/guardians, and/or grandparents can opt-in for two weeks of technology disconnection and reflection activities with their students and/or families. While media fasts have been growing in popularity, and different groups are entering into disconnect challenges, this will be the world's first large-scale disconnect challenge for an entire region.
