Grande Prairie, AB – Approximately 400 junior high student-athletes from across Peace Wapiti Public School Division (PWSD) are ready to compete in the annual track meet event honouring Dave Bleile, a former teacher who spent the bulk of his career at Helen E. Taylor School in Wembley. The event will begin at 10:00 a.m. at Legion Field in Grande Prairie on Friday, May 11. Awards will be handed out at 1:30 p.m. Rain date for the event is Tuesday, May 15.
Students compete in junior, intermediate and senior age groups. Results are compiled to identify winners in both small and large school categories, creating the potential for up to six schools to win plaques at the event.
Participating large schools are Harry Balfour School/Whispering Ridge Community School, Hythe Regional School, Peace Wapiti Academy and Sexsmith Secondary School. Small schools competing in the event are Bezanson School, Clairmont Community School, Elmworth School, Helen E. Taylor School, LaGlace School, Penson School, Rycroft School, Spirit River Regional Academy and Woking School.
Darren Robertson, a teacher at Hythe Regional School, has been in charge of the Dave Bleile Track Meet for the past eight years.
"This is the last major athletic event of the school year for junior high students. It is a great way to end the athletic year as we bring together student-athletes from across the Division to compete," says Mr. Robertson.
The meet will include track races, hurdles, long and triple jumps, high jump, field throwing events, shot put, discus, and javelin.
"There's a lot of school pride shown as schools compete against one another for plaques which are awarded to the top schools overall in each category," adds Mr. Robertson.
About the Dave Bleile Track Meet:
Dave Bleile became involved with organizing the County of Grande Prairie Track and Field Meet more than 30 years ago. In 1995, with the amalgamation of school divisions that led to the creation of Peace Wapiti Public School Division, the event became known as the PWSD Track and Field Meet. Following Mr. Bleile's retirement in 2010, his colleagues – many of whom were former participants in the event – moved to have the meet renamed in his honour. Mr. Bleile has continued to volunteer with the event throughout the years since his retirement.
