A warm welcome is extended to parents and children as they take the first step in their educational journey when Kindergarten online registration opens at Peace Wapiti Public School Division (PWSD) on Tuesday, March 27, 2018. Registration will be open to all children turning five in 2018, and can be completed online from the comfort of home at www.pwsd76.ab.ca/registration.
First-time users will need to set up an online registration account, and then complete the registration process. A birth certificate and proof of residency are requirements for online or in-person registration. PWSD's registration webpage also provides a helpful 'How-to Register Online' document and other valuable resources, including a link to the Kindergarten webpage. Those who do not have access to the Internet should contact their school. Registration is not complete until approved by PWSD's Central Registrar.
PWSD offers both full-day and half-day Kindergarten programs. The school division and its partners also provide supports to preschool children who have been early identified as having mild, moderate or severe disabilities.
"A quality early childhood program lays the groundwork for a child's success," says Karen Chrenek, District Principal at PWSD. "We are ready to work with families to ensure their children experience learning that will set them up for success in the future."
Ms. Chrenek stresses the value of registering children early to avoid the last-minute rush.
"PWSD schools will continue to register students throughout the spring and up until the end of August – even after the school year has begun. However, a best case scenario is one where your child has been registered early," says Ms. Chrenek.
Some schools begin the school year with staggered entry – introducing small groups of Kindergartens to the school on different days – or choose to delay the start of Kindergarten until after older students have settled back into the school routine. Families should consult with their local school about the start-up dates and times.
PWSD offers 19 elementary school options to area families, including Harry Balfour School, located in the heart of Grande Prairie. The new Whispering Ridge Community School, located north of city limits, will open on September 4 to coincide with the first day of classes for the 2018-2019 school year. Continuing north, families will find schools in Clairmont, Sexsmith, Teepee Creek, Woking, Rycroft, Spirit River, Eaglesham, Bonanza and Savanna. For those living in towns and villages west of the city, welcoming schools are available in Wembley, LaGlace, Beaverlodge, Elmworth and Hythe. Bezanson and Ridgevalley Schools are located east of the city, while Penson School in Grovedale serves families in the southern end of the Division. To find a PWSD school near you, call Central Office at (780) 532-8133 or view the school boundary maps on the registration webpage, www.pwsd76.ab.ca/registration.
