Trustees for the 2017-2021 term took their Oath of Office, elected this year's Board Chair and Vice-Chair, established committee membership, and reviewed policies relating to trusteeship at the annual Peace Wapiti Public School Division (PWSD) organizational meeting of the Board on Thursday, October 26, 2017.
By acclamation, Dana McIntosh will be returning to her position as Board Chair for a fourth year. Ms. McIntosh represents Ward 9 – Clairmont and Bezanson.
"Our division is both geographically and demographically diverse, and in making decisions, the Board keeps the needs of all students in mind," says Ms. McIntosh. "As Chair, I plan to continue to lobby government for a full review of transportation funding in Alberta; advocate for government recognition of the difficulties in providing crucial services to rural schools, such as mental health supports; lobby for improved rural education funding; while continuing to make student-centered decisions, such as our ongoing support of PWSD's Quality Learning Environment and Collaborative Response Model."
Ward 7 Trustee Stefanie Clarke, representing Grande Prairie East and Grovedale, was elected Vice-Chair. She has been a member of the Board since 2013. This year will mark her first in the role of Vice-Chair. She replaces Ward 8 Trustee Robert Knull who served in the role during the 2016-2017 school year.
"I look forward to the opportunity to support the Chair," says Ms. Clarke. "My goal as Trustee, and now Vice-Chair, is to be present and available to listen and understand to the needs of the community, while continuing to work toward improving the quality of education in all PWSD schools. As a second-term Trustee, I will continue to lobby for improved transportation funding and service, and for PWSD's top three Capital Plan goals – to address enrolment growth by securing replacement schools for Harry Balfour School and Peace Wapiti Academy, and a new Kindergarten-Grade 8 school in Clairmont Heights."
Acclaimed newcomers Kari Scheers, Ward 1, and Lori Grant, Ward 3, along with incumbents Sharilyn Anderson, Kim Moodie, Wendy Kelm, Dale Crane, Stefanie Clarke, Robert Knull and Dana McIntosh – representing Wards 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 respectively – were officially sworn in at the meeting. The first meeting of the new Board took place immediately following the organizational meeting.
