The last coin has been counted and students throughout Peace Wapiti Public School Division (PWSD) have come through once again for cancer research, raising an astounding $49,460.22.
Among the 17 schools participating in Terry Fox School Run events this year, the top fundraising title goes to students at the combined Harry Balfour School and Whispering Ridge Community School, for bringing in $13,414 for cancer research.
Beaverlodge Elementary School Principal Paul Cincurak calls their Terry Fox Run "a highly spirited event". This year, the school's 380 Junior Kindergarten - Grade 6 students raised $7,313 for the cause.
"Students and staff gathered in the gym to watch videos about Terry's mission and to discuss the significance of his run," adds Mr. Cincurak. "We also receive tremendous support from our parents who walk and run with us, and the Beaverlodge community recognizes the importance of Terry's legacy and the work of the Canadian Cancer Society."
Savanna School, PWSD's most northern school and the first to host a 2017 school run, raised $385. Students of Bonanza School raised $1,850.15 for the cause.
Students at Teepee Creek School ran a loop from the school through the historic village of Sorkenville and raised $3,000.25 in honour of the 37th anniversary of the Terry Fox Run. Rycroft School held a 'Hotdogs for Hope' fundraiser during lunch, followed by a run event that generated $1,700 for cancer research.
For the first time in the school's history, Eaglesham School held a run event and raised $2,512.15.
R. W. Zahara Public School in Sexsmith brought in $3,417; Elmworth School collected $1,432; and Bezanson School more than doubled their $1,200 goal, raising $2,451.
Students at Peace Wapiti Academy ran a loop around Muskoseepi Park and raised $869.20; Spirit River Regional Academy collected $417.60; and the Beaverlodge Regional High School run generated $400.
Clairmont Community School raised $1,736.11; LaGlace School brought in $2,342; and Penson School collected $1,690.
Wembley Elementary School's 194 Kindergarten - Grade 4 students dressed as superheroes for their run around Wembley. The school exceeded their goal of $3,700, raising $4,530.76.
