Today marks the final day of classes for the 2016-2017 school year for approximately 6,000 students, more than 360 teachers, and 600 non-teaching staff in the 33 schools that make up Peace Wapiti Public School Division (PWSD). Central Office in Grande Prairie will maintain regular office hours throughout the summer, with the exception of Friday afternoons during July 7 - August 11 when the office will be closed to the public.
Many students, especially struggling readers, slip out of practice during the summer months. To prevent "summer slide", families are encouraged to continue with literacy-related activities during the break.
PWSD's Alternate Education Program offers free high school courses to youth under the age of 20 as of September 1 of the current year. The program provides opportunities to upgrade Diploma Exam and course results, study additional courses, meet post-secondary prerequisite requirements, complete the requirements of an Alberta High School Diploma, or prepare for the General Educational Development (GED) exam.
Upcoming school year calendars
The first day of classes is Tuesday, September 5. Families may subscribe to PWSD's online calendar at http://www.pwsd76.ab.ca/Calendar to receive alerts of important dates on their computer or mobile device. Families should also review a printable PDF of the 2017-2018 school year calendar (pictured), available at http://www.pwsd76.ab.ca/Resources/ParentResources/calendars, and be mindful of official school holidays when booking vacation time. A draft copy of the 2018-2019 calendar, provided on the same webpage, will assist with long-term planning.
School supply lists, online registration, and school fees
Important back-to-school information will be posted under the 'Registration' tab on all PWSD school websites, including links to school supply lists, online registration, and school fees reflecting changes brought about by the Alberta Government's Bill 1: An Act to Reduce School Fees.
InfoSnap – Online registration and demographic review
New families may access PWSD's InfoSnap online registration at any time by clicking the 'Register Online' links provided on the PWSD website and all school websites. In September, families of current students can verify or correct their child's demographic details online using the InfoSnap form, including address, phone number and emergency contacts. Schools provide computer access to those who do not have Internet service.
Bus safety and e-notifications
In September, trained PWSD busing representatives conduct free safety presentations at participating schools, including a safety talk and video, followed by safety drills. Wondering if your bus will be on time? Sign up for email notifications on the status of individual or multiple bus routes at http://transportation.pwsd76.ab.ca. Near the end of August, school bus drivers contact families to share pick-up times for the upcoming year.
Registered Kindergarten students and their parents may be scheduled for individualized meetings or orientation sessions during the first week of September. The meetings provide valuable insights into the type of programming required for first-time students and eases the transition for both parents and young children. Kindergarten start-up dates vary by school – contact the school for details.
PWSD wishes all students, families and staff a safe and enjoyable summer!
