Luncheon to recognize partners and students
GRANDE PRAIRIE, AB – The three local School Districts, Grande Prairie Public School District (GPPSD), Peace Wapiti School Division (PWSD) and Grande Prairie Catholic School District (GPCSD), have partnered with Merit Contractors Association, Grande Prairie Regional College (GPRC) and industry to allow twenty three grade ten students to explore multiple skilled trade areas through short industry interviews and on site work study placements.
The objective is to expand career education in the three Districts with a focus on increasing students’ knowledge of the skilled trades, specifically in the construction industry.
"The partnership is an excellent move going forward, as the three local Districts recognize the need in our community to increase our students’ knowledge of the skilled trades as a desirable career option," said, Kimberly Frykas, Director of Instruction Grade 7-12 at the Grande Prairie Public School District.
Merit Contractors Association, the major sponsor of Fast Track to the Trades program, support the education of Grande Prairie and area youth. Students explore multiple construction trades and make connections with industry partners in our community. Our goal is to provide students with opportunity to gain a realistic understanding of the work of tradespeople through onsite work-study opportunities. This program provides the opportunity for local industry to directly educate and encourage future tradespeople to choose careers in the local construction industry.
Through our experience working with students in career education, we know Grade 10 is the key grade level to explore the skilled trades. Key high school programming decisions are made at this grade and our goal to increase the exposure our students have in the skilled trades industries prior to making future education choices.

2. Short Interviews at Grande Prairie Regional College - students will meet with industry representatives to learn about their skilled trade (job skills, career opportunities, projects, etc.)
