Peace Wapiti Public School Division (PWSD) will be rooting for 29 students as they face off against others in the region at the annual North West Regional Skills Canada Competition (RSCC) on April 27-28 in Fairview. Skills Canada competitions feature the talents of Alberta's trade and technology students. The regional level of competition is open to students competing in the areas of Auto Service, Baking, Cabinet Making, Carpentry, Culinary Arts, Fashion Technology, Graphic Design, IT Network Systems, Junior and Intermediate Hairstyling, Outdoor Power and Recreation Equipment, Photography, Robotics, Video Production, Welding, and Workplace Safety.
Beaverlodge Regional High School will send five students to the RSCC event. Competitors from the school's Grade 11 class include Johan Unger, Culinary Arts; Brianna Wright and Meadow Thomas, Junior Hairstyling; and Sharlotte Fuchs, Intermediate Hairstyling. Grade 12 student Kaitlynn Sperling will compete in Baking.
Ten students will represent Peace Wapiti Academy at the competition. Grade 11 students Jason Cote and Riley Welander will compete in Outdoor Power Equipment, and Moriah Berg will compete in the Culinary Arts category. Grade 12 students Landon Cook will display his skills in the Carpentry category, Taleesha Mahe will compete in Photography, and Kristin Cardin will compete in Intermediate Hairstyling. The Robotics category will feature the skills of Mahlon Knight, Grade 10; Brandon Toews, Grade 11; and Grade 12 students Morgan Embree and Carter Smith.
For the third year in a row, Grade 12 student Michaela Huber will represent Savanna School in Culinary Arts.
Sexsmith Secondary School will send 13 students to the competition. Grade 9 student David Romanuik will compete in the Auto Service category. Grade 10 students Fox Imler and Samuel Raskauskas will display their skills in Robotics, Sarah Morrison and Samantha McCarthy will face off in Junior Hairstyling, and Sydney Boehmer will compete in Intermediate Hairstyling. Grade 11 student Dylan Moodie has entered the Outdoor Power and Recreation Equipment category. The Cabinet Making category will feature the work of Grade 10 student Matthew Germain and Jared Fehr, Grade 11. The Carpentry category will include Grade 10 student Nolan Christensen and Justin Toews, Grade 11. Grade 12 students Benjamin Richards will compete in the Welding category and Sarah Jensen will display her skills in Photography.
Qualifying RSCC medalists will earn a place at the 25th Provincial Skills Canada Competition (PSCC) on May 10-11, 2017 at the Edmonton EXPO Centre. Gold medalists at the PSCC will become part of Team Alberta and will compete at the Skills Canada National Competition in Winnipeg on May 31-June 3, 2017.
