Following the Board meeting held on Thursday, January 19, Trustees toured Harry Balfour School, PWSD's only Kindergarten - Grade 8 school located inside Grande Prairie city limits.
The opening of the new Whispering Ridge Community School (WRCS) during the 2017-2018 school year will address student enrolment growth experienced at HBS in recent years. When WRCS opens, approximately half of HBS's current 840 students and 84 staff members will move together to the new facility. A second request for a K-8 school, located southeast of Grande Prairie, part of the Board's 2016-2019 Three-Year Plan, will see closure of the current HBS, and will also bring an end to busing young rural students through the city's busy central core.
After touring the school, Trustees met with Ms. Courtney Robinson's Grade 6R class for a question-and-answer session and engagement activity on School Board governance, and also gathered feedback on what is working well at the school. Groups worked together to come up with three words to describe what makes their school special. The words were entered into a 'Wordle' – a digital application used to create a visual word cloud in which words that appear most frequently are given greater prominence – that can be printed as a poster for the school.
