Back-to-back FNMI hockey-themed tours planned for September at PWSD schools

September 09, 2016

PWSD is pleased to announce two consecutive hockey-themed FNMI school tours which will take place during the month of September.

Back by popular demand are NHL father-son duo Reggie and Jamie Leach. The pair visited a number of schools in 2014, and will cover seven additional schools during this year's tour on September 12-16.

"The presentations are designed for Grades 4-12 students," says Darrell Willier, FNMI Education Coordinator at PWSD, who also organizes the FNMI school tours. "As the only Aboriginal father and son to be listed on the Stanley Cup, they will share the importance of education, setting goals, sticking with your dreams, and making good life choices."

Born in Riverton, Manitoba, Reggie Leach is noted for his numerous NHL records. The former Boston Bruin and Golden Seal became a Stanley Cup champion in 1975 as a member of the Philadelphia Flyers team. In 1976, he was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) and awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy, and was also a member of the Canada Cup championship team. In 1980, he was named All Star Game MVP. In 2015, he released his biography, The Riverton Rifle – Straight Shooting on Hockey and Life. He was awarded the Order of Manitoba on July 7, 2016. Son Jamie Leach, a 1991 and 1992 Pittsburgh Penguins Stanley Cup champion, is now a registered golf professional with the Canadian Golf Association. The pair operates Shoot-to-Score Hockey, a traveling hockey school designed for remote communities, which blends hockey instruction with "Life Choices" sessions.

Reggie and Jamie Leach will present at the following schools:

Monday, September 12:
10:00 a.m. – Savanna School
1:00 p.m. – Bonanza School

Tuesday, September 13:
1:00 p.m. – Teepee Creek School

On September 19-22, eight PWSD schools will welcome Brigette Lacquette, a member of the National Women's Hockey Team since 2013, and current member of the Canadian Women's Hockey League's Calgary Inferno team. Born in Mallard, Manitoba, and raised on the Ojibway-Cote First Nation, Ms. Lacquette was a member of the University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldog Hockey team while completing a Bachelor's degree in American Indian Studies.

Ms. Lacquette's lengthy list of athletic achievements includes a gold medal with Team Canada at the 2016 Nations Cup in Fussen, Germany; a silver at the 2016 Women's World Hockey Championships in Kamloops, British Columbia; and silver at the 2015 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Women's Worlds in Malmo, Sweden.

"It's an exciting opportunity to host Ms. Lacquette," says Mr. Willier. "Her presentation will cover her academic and athletic accomplishments, and there will be time set aside for pictures and autographs."

Mr. Willier says the goal of the FNMI guest speaker series is twofold. "First, it provides our FNMI students with positive role models which they can identify with from a cultural perspective. Secondly, the guest speakers also help to break down negative stereotypes that may still exist regarding FNMI people. We have been fortunate in the past to secure high-calibre guests whose achievements have served as an inspiration to everyone. This year's tour promises the same.

Ms. Lacquette will present at the following schools:

Monday, September 19:
10:20 a.m. – Beaverlodge Regional High School
1:00 p.m. – Hythe Regional School
