The first meeting of Peace Wapiti Public School Division's (PWSD's) Jurisdictional Student Engagement Team (JSET) took place yesterday, Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at the Stonebridge Hotel in Grande Prairie. The meeting included a mixture of sessions aimed at establishing a vision for the team and empowering members to fan out and develop avenues for the student voice to be heard in PWSD schools. A cross-section of approximately 40 Grades 6-12 student leaders from across the Division, along with 20 teachers known as Student Leadership Champions, came together to offer input on what they feel will create Quality Learning Environments within PWSD.
Students, teachers and Trustees Clarke and Kelm mingled during opening ice-breaker activities, followed by a welcome and outline of the day’s events from Deputy Superintendent Mark Davidson.
Each table was assigned one of four Critical Elements of PWSD’s Quality Learning Environment and asked to highlight words that resonated with them. They then created lists of questions based on their word selections. Questions were posted around the room and team members were assigned to new groups to vary the discussion. The groups also created pictures and quotes describing what their ideal classroom would look like in a Quality Learning Environment.
Students and teachers met separately during the second half of the meeting. Kaitlynn Douglas, a Grade 11 student at Beaverlodge Regional High School and member of the Minister of Education's Student Advisory Council, led the student-focused presentation, while Deputy Superintendent Mark Davidson led the teachers' discussion.
Miss Douglas posed the question, "What is your role as a student in implementing PWSD's Quality Learning Environment?" In the next room, teachers were asked to describe their role.
From the exercises, students and teachers defined what PWSD’s JSET will look like and developed draft manifestos.
