Austin Patrick to offer youthful perspectives on upcoming provincial election
A student in Peace Wapiti Public School Division (PWSD) has been selected to participate in a three-member high school panel which will air on CBC Radio One's provincial program, Alberta@Noon.
Austin Patrick, a Grade 12 student at Sexsmith Secondary School, will offer provincial election commentary along with fellow panelists – two Grade 12 students from Olds and Canmore.
Participation in the panel discussion will be by telephone. In putting together the three-member panel, CBC Radio sought student representation from south, central and northern Alberta.
"We wanted the perspective of interested and engaged young people from across the province to share their thoughts on the provincial election campaign – what they think are the main issues the province is facing and why they feel it's important to vote," says Terri Campbell, producer of Alberta@Noon.
"One of the major issues that the province is currently facing is the recent downturn of our resource-based economy, and how the elected political party will resolve this problem," says Austin Patrick. "I think that voter apathy in inexcusable, especially for younger people, because of the fact that their vote will matter in determining the party that will reflect their beliefs. I think it is every Albertan's civic responsibility to go out and vote in this upcoming election."
"Austin is a well-informed student in my Social Studies 30-1 class," says Sherry Viken, high school Social Studies teacher at Sexsmith Secondary School and PWSD's Social Studies Instructional Coach. "We have covered the upcoming provincial election in class and Austin has added to our discussions and asks strong questions about Alberta's economic future. He is an open-minded student who encourages thoughtful discussion. His enthusiasm and knowledge makes him a terrific candidate for CBC's high school panel on the upcoming election."
Listeners are invited to tune in to CBC Radio One tomorrow, Friday, May 1 at 12:05 p.m. to hear the high school panel's first discussion, or online at www.cbc.ca/Edmonton. The panel discussion will also be available by podcast following the live show at www.cbc.ca/albertaatnoon. The student panel will reconvene during CBC Radio's election night coverage on May 5, which begins at 8:00 p.m.
