Peace Wapiti Public School Division (PWSD) is pleased to announce that Beaverlodge Elementary School, as part of its continued commitment to the community, will offer Junior Kindergarten programming beginning late September, 2015, for Beaverlodge-area children turning four by December 31st, 2015. The 33-week program will run until the end of May.
Since 2006, Beaverlodge Elementary School has worked closely with the Beaverlodge Playschool Society to develop and deliver preschool programming. School administration, in consultation with PWSD, agreed to assume the program after receiving a letter from the Playschool Society on February 26, 2015, announcing their intent to dissolve their Board at the end of the current school year, offering control of the program to the elementary school.
Speaking on behalf of the Beaverlodge Playschool Society Board, Tamara McCallum, President, said, “We are excited for this change as we believe that Beaverlodge Elementary School has access to additional resources that can enhance the existing program, providing greater learning opportunities for the young children of our community.”
Principal Paul Cincurak has met with the Playschool Society to finalize transition plans.
Principal Cincurak says the community can expect that the new Junior Kindergarten will maintain the ‘learn through play’ philosophy of the existing Playschool Society program. Near the end of the program, the focus will shift to Kindergarten readiness.
“We will assume all aspects of staffing, registration and programming,” adds Principal Cincurak. “Stacey Rey, our Inclusive Education Coordinator, will work with the Playschool Society Board to determine which materials will be transferred to our school as part of the reorganization. As a certified teacher, Ms. Rey will also work with the Junior Kindergarten instructor to implement the new program.”
The school will offer two options – Monday and Wednesday afternoons, and Tuesday and Thursday afternoons – with room for up to 20 children per class. Enrolment priority will be given to three- and four-year-olds identified as Early Entry by Alberta Education. There is no registration fee; instead, parents will be asked to pay a nominal one-time supply fee.
“On a personal note, I am sad to see the end of such an excellent program,” says Principal Cincurak. “I want to thank the Playschool Society for their commitment to serving the educational needs of Beaverlodge’s children. It has been a pleasure to work with such a dedicated group of educators over the past nine years and we look forward to the opportunity to continue their good work in our school.”
The registration event is tentatively scheduled for the end of April. If the program fills up, a wait list will be created. Parents of four-years-olds are advised to watch for an upcoming advertisement listing the specific details of the registration night event.
