PWSD releases results of 2013-2014 Provincial Achievement Tests and Diploma Exams

The results are in! Students of Peace Wapiti Public School Division (PWSD) continue to demonstrate success on the Provincial Achievement Tests (PATs) administered annually by Alberta Education to students in Grades 3, 6 and 9, and the Diploma Exams, administered to Grade 12 students. In keeping with Alberta Education’s decision to transition from summative end-of-the-year PATs to the new Student Learning Assessments (SLAs) administered in September, 2014, PWSD opted to participate in pilot SLAs with Grade 3 students throughout the Division this year. For this reason, there are no 2013-2014 Grade 3 PAT results to report.

Provincial Achievement Test results
Grade 6 Language Arts results were strong; standing statistically even with the province with 81.1 per cent of PWSD students achieving the acceptable standard. Grade 6 Math showed a slight improvement over the previous year. While Grade 6 Science and Social Studies results were down slightly over last year, averages in these two areas were in keeping with the declines seen in the comparative provincial data.

Grade 9 PAT results sat close to the provincial average with 73.3 per cent of Language Arts and 68.3 per cent of Science students achieving the acceptable standard. Math and Social Studies performance fell slightly to 55.6 per cent and 54.3 per cent respectively. Historically, these courses have seen the greatest fluctuation at both local and provincial levels.

PWSD’s Learning Coaches are working with teachers across the Division to analyze results and create a plan to address challenges.

Diploma Exam results positive for PWSD graduates
In the past eight years, PWSD has seen improvement in meeting the acceptable standard in five of the nine diploma courses written during this period, while the province has experienced decline in all subject areas. In this same time frame, PWSD has experienced improvement in exceeding the provincial standard in six of nine areas, while the province has seen improvement in five areas.

Results for the 2013-2014 school year show that PWSD students scored above provincial averages in both English 30-1 and 30-2. English 30-2 results ranked 2.7 per cent above the province with 92.5 per cent of students achieving the acceptable standard, while English 30-1 results were an impressive 3.5 per cent ahead of the provincial average.

Social Studies 30-1 results showed 83.2 per cent of students achieving the acceptable standard; a significant improvement over last year’s 73.4 per cent. Physics also continues to be a bright spot, with 88.7 per cent of PWSD students achieving the acceptable standard, compared to the province’s 82.9 per cent. Science 30 has grown in popularity among PWSD students with a total of 44 students writing the exam; a considerable increase from the 21 students recorded in the previous year, and seven in 2009-2010. 

Math 30-1 and 30-2, along with Chemistry 30 and Biology 30 posed challenges, partially due to smaller sample sizes when compared with the other courses, which produces greater fluctuation in results. PWSD’s Learning Coaches, the Peace Academy of Virtual Education (PAVE) and Assistant Superintendent Bob Stewart have joined forces to assist small schools in addressing challenges created by low enrolments.

Superintendent Sheldon Rowe says he is proud of the gains made by PWSD’s students in the areas of Physics, Social Studies and English. “In order to maintain continued improvement in our provincial testing results, we remain committed to seeking improved methods to ensure student success in the areas of Math, Chemistry and Biology. As a Board, we will continue to invest significant dollars in mentorship programs, as well as our Leveled Literacy Intervention, Learning Coaches, and FNMI projects. These projects support teachers in developing new strategies to deliver the curriculum,” says Mr. Rowe.
