If I can – PWSD schools to host inspirational speaker Chris Koch

October 03, 2014

Next week, students at several schools within Peace Wapiti Public School Division (PWSD) will learn the importance of not letting life’s limitations or obstacles stand in the way of achieving goals and dreams when guest speaker Chris Koch, born without arms and legs, delivers his inspirational message on setting goals and challenging oneself.

Born and raised in the small farming and ranching community of Nanton, Alberta, Mr. Koch says, “It was clearly established early on in my life that I would not be raised with pity or sympathy. Life was pretty normal. Sure, I had to do things a little differently and maybe took a little bit longer to complete tasks, but I was determined to be just like the rest and I was always treated that way.”

Following high school graduation, Mr. Koch moved to Calgary for post-secondary studies. He later transferred to Ottawa to work with The War Amps of Canada while continuing his studies in history and psychology. Five years later, he returned to Calgary to accept a position within the airline industry, as well as returning to his first love – working in agriculture. It was during this time that he began working on an idea for ‘If I Can’, a traveling show which evolved into a larger project to include YouTube messages and speaking engagements at schools and conferences.

“Simply put, if I can do the things I have done so far in my life, what is stopping anyone else from doing the same?” adds Mr. Koch.

Earlier this year, Mr. Koch’s story was featured on the Oprah Winfrey Network’s Super Soul Sunday. He also appeared on the Dr. Oz Show in September.

“When I visit schools within Peace Wapiti Public School Division next week, I plan to speak to students about living life and going out there and doing whatever you can. To me, it’s better to be more afraid of regret than failure. What if our purpose in life is to have fun and enjoy it?” adds Mr. Koch.
