FNMI school tour to feature former NHL father-son duo

May 09, 2014

May 9, 2014: Peace Wapiti Public School Division (PWSD) is pleased to announce that the second of two First Nations Métis, and Inuit (FNMI) school tours scheduled for this spring will feature NHL father-son duo, Reggie Leach, who played 13 seasons in the NHL, and Jamie Leach, a former member of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The tour will include stops at eight schools throughout the Division during the week of May 12-16, 2014.

“The presentations are designed for Grades 4-12 students. As the only Aboriginal father and son to be listed on the Stanley Cup, the duo will share the importance of education, setting goals, sticking with your dreams, and making good life choices,” says Darrell Willier, FNMI Education Coordinator at PWSD, who also organizes the well-anticipated school tours.

“The goal of this tour is twofold: it provides our FNMI students with positive role models which they can identify with from a cultural perspective, and the guest speakers also help to break down negative stereotypes that may still exist regarding FNMI people. We have been fortunate in the past to secure high-calibre guests whose achievements have served as an inspiration to everyone, and I know our students and staff will learn a lot from this father and son team,” adds Mr. Willier.

Born in Riverton, Manitoba, Reggie Leach is noted for his numerous NHL records. The former Boston Bruin and Golden Seal moved on to a 1975 Stanley Cup win as a member of the Philadelphia Flyers. In 1976, he was named Most Valuable Player and awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy. That same year, he was a member of the Canada Cup championship team.

Son Jamie Leach, a ’91 and ’92 Stanley Cup champion with the Pittsburgh Penguins, says he is “looking forward to meeting the students and staff of PWSD schools and sharing some of my experiences on what has helped me to be successful in life and business.”

The pair now operates Shoot-to-Score Hockey, a traveling hockey school designed for remote communities, blending hockey instruction with “Life Choices” sessions for participants.
