To date, 14 confirmed cases of measles have been identified in Alberta in 2014. Measles – an extremely contagious and potentially severe illness – is of greatest risk to children and young adults who have not received two doses of a measles-containing vaccine. Peace Wapiti Public School Division asks parents and guardians to review the attached recent notice from James Talbot, Alberta Health’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, entitled Important information about measles to Alberta School Administrators, staff and parents/guardians. In addition to the attached copy, this document is also available online on Peace Wapiti Public School Division’s website at http://www.pwsd76.ab.ca/Publications/Important-Information-about-Measles.pdf and on all school websites under the Publications heading.
Peace Wapiti Public School Division would like to draw your attention to two key messages within the document:
- Susceptible individuals will be excluded from school and all other school activities outside the home. The period of exclusion will extend from five days after the first exposure through to 21days after the last exposure. This includes students, teachers and volunteers. To find out if the definition of “susceptible individual” applies to you or your child, please review the information found at the above link.
- Albertans uncertain of their immunization history, or their child’s immunization history, can call their local public health office or Health Link Alberta (1-866-408-5465) to discuss.
