FNMI school tour to feature CFL players

April 11, 2014

PWSD is pleased to announce that the first of two First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) school tours scheduled for this spring will feature Jed Roberts, former CFL linebacker and defensive end for the Edmonton Eskimos, and J.R. LaRose, a free safety for the CFL’s BC Lions who also played four seasons with the Edmonton Eskimos. The four-day tour is scheduled for April 14-17 and will include stops at eight schools within the Division.

“The goal of the FNMI guest speaker tours is twofold,” says Darrell Willier, FNMI Education Coordinator at PWSD, who also plans the well-anticipated school tours.

“First, it provides our FNMI students with positive role models which they can identify with from a cultural perspective. Secondly, the guest speakers also help to break down negative stereotypes that may still exist regarding FNMI people. We have been fortunate in the past to secure high-calibre guests whose achievements have served as an inspiration to everyone. This year’s lineup promises the same.” adds Mr. Willier.

Past special guests have included Lorne Cardinal, an actor who is well known for his role as Sergeant Davis Quinton on CTV’s Corner Gas; Ashley Callingbull, Miss Canada International 2010; and Linsay Willier, a finalist on Canada’s Next Top Model.

The guest speakers say they are looking forward to speaking with students and offering words of encouragement.

“This tour will give me the opportunity to reconnect with friends that I've made over the past couple of years all over the Peace Country, and perhaps make some new ones. I always enjoy sharing my stories of triumph and heartbreak with the young people of your community. I have known J.R. LaRose for a long time and I am thrilled to be able to watch him share his incredible story of perseverance and courage with young people,” says Mr. Roberts.

“I’m excited to share my story as I feel it is relatable to what youth are being faced with on a daily basis,” says Mr. LaRose.
