Full funding confirmed for replacement Harry Balfour School

March 11, 2020

Grande Prairie, AB Peace Wapiti Public School Division (PWPSD) welcomed Education Minister Adriana LaGrange to Central Office on Monday for a brief meeting during her tour of northwestern Alberta, where she confirmed full construction funding for the replacement Harry Balfour School. Design funding for the replacement school was included among the provincial government's initial Budget 2019 Capital Plan announcement in November

"Replacing the existing Harry Balfour School has been the PWPSD Board's top capital plan priority for several years. Moving Harry Balfour students to the county will also achieve an important goal to eliminate the additional time required to transport rural elementary students through the busy central core of the city, simultaneously reducing early morning pick-up and late drop-off times."

–  Kari Scheers, PWPSD Board Chair

"Our government remains committed to building new schools and modernizing our existing ones to ensure students continue to learn in safe and modern spaces. Education remains a priority and our government's significant investment in school infrastructure is delivering on our promise to prioritize schools for today and generations to come."

– Adriana LaGrange, Minister of Education

"The new replacement Harry Balfour School will be located outside Grande Prairie and continue to serve communities around the city. Moving the school will result in significantly reduced ride times for students and ensure they continue to receive a great education. I am thrilled this new school will meet the current and future needs of students in the Grande Prairie area."

–  Tracy Allard, MLA, Grande Prairie
