Election of the Board Chair and Vice-Chair is an annual event at PWPSD. According to PWPSD policy, a Trustee may serve in the role of Board Chair for a maximum of five consecutive years. The role of Vice-Chair is limited to two consecutive years of service.

Board members expressed thanks to Trustee Dana McIntosh who served as Board Chair for the maximum five consecutive years. Ms. McIntosh represents Ward 9 – Clairmont and Bezanson.

Former Vice-Chair Kari Scheers (pictured left, below) was elected Board Chair for the 2019-2020 school year. Ms. Scheers represents Ward 1 – Eaglesham, Woking, Rycroft.

By acclamation, Ward 8 Trustee Bob Knull (pictured right, below), representing Ridgevalley, was elected Vice-Chair for the 2019-2020 school year. He replaces Ward 1 Trustee Kari Scheers who served in the role during the past 2018-2019 school year.

Minister defers decision on transferring capital funds to cover transportation deficit

In her written response to the Board's request to transfer funds from capital reserves to cover the budgeted 2019-2020 transportation deficit, Education Minister Adriana LaGrange said she is deferring her decision until later this fall. She added, "...our government is taking a close look at Alberta's fiscal situation to determine where our money is going. This work has already begun with the creation of the MacKinnon Panel. Information from this review will guide our decisions to eliminate waste, duplication and non-essential spending so we can fund key priorities."

PWPSD Board declines increase

The Board unanimously voted to oppose the recommended two per cent increase to Policy BHD - Trustee Compensation and Expenses, as indicated in the Consumer Price Index. Guideline and Procedure #5 of Policy BHD states that every September 1, "the Board per diem shall be incremented by the current Canadian Consumer Price Index as established by the Superintendent or designate".

Borrowing resolution approved

As a precautionary measure, the Board annually approves establishing a line of credit for occasional short-term borrowing needs to meet cash flow requirements. The overdraft interest rate will be bank prime rate less 0.75 per cent, which currently sits at 3.20 per cent.

PWPSD appoints Regional School Sites Committee representatives

In a recent interview, Grande Prairie Mayor Bill Given explained that the Regional School Sites Committee aims to improve coordination between the school boards, the city and the development committee.

"The intent of the initiative is to coordinate and collaborate more among the city, the county, the Public School Board, the Catholic School Board, the Francophone School Board and Peace Wapiti Public School Division, to ensure that all of those different organizations are working together in a coordinated manner to identify locations for future schools."

PWPSD Administration appointed Deputy Superintendent Darren Young to the committee. The Board named Trustee Dana McIntosh to the committee.

MELT extension update

The Board reviewed the Government of Alberta's Mandatory Entry Level Training (MELT) Fact Sheet for Class 2 drivers employed by education and school authorities, which explains the program steps and the revised completion deadlines.
