PWPSD schools welcome basketball star Michael Linklater

March 11, 2019

This week, students and staff at seven schools throughout Peace Wapiti Public School Division (PWPSD) will welcome Michael Linklater during the four-day PWPSD Indigenous Guest Speaker Series.

Mr. Linklater will offer a variety of presentation options during his half-day visits with schools, including gym classes based on his Prime Basketball Development values; school-wide assemblies that focus on basketball, culture and healthy living; classroom presentations on his Boys with Braids campaign values; and after-school practices.

"I believe it is important to give back to the youth, and this is a reason why I am so passionate about sharing," says Mr. Linklater.

Brigitte Benning, Indigenous Educator at PWPSD, coordinated the highly anticipated school tour. Her predecessor, Darrell Willier, developed the PWPSD Indigenous Speakers Series, which she calls "an amazing initiative" that she will continue in her role.

"We have many inspiring Indigenous role models in our community and across the country, including athletes, activists, doctors, lawyers, artists, entrepreneurs, and change-makers in every capacity," adds Ms. Benning. "Through sharing their stories and skills, these role models can inspire all students, identify with our Indigenous students, and walk with all of us on the path of reconciliation. Mr. Linklater is an outstanding athlete and an inspiring presenter. We are privileged to welcome him to our schools."

About Michael Linklater:
Mr. Linklater, a proud Nehiyaw (Cree), is from the Thunderchild First Nation in Saskatchewan and works with SaskSport's Aboriginal Coaches and Officials Program. Prior to becoming a Fiba 3x3 World professional basketball player and Team Canada member, he was captain of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, leading the team to its first and only CanWest Conference Championship and CIS National Championship in 2010. His company, Prime Basketball Development, teaches basketball players what it takes to become a champion on and off the court through individual skill development, teamwork, and classroom instruction. His Boys with Braids campaign brings awareness to the cultural significance of why Indigenous boys and men wear a braid. He has delivered hundreds of keynote addresses to youths and adults across North America. His numerous awards include Indspire, 3x3 World Tour Most Spectacular Player, the Saskatchewan CBC Future 40 Under 40, the Chief of Police Award for Community Service, and the Circle of Honour Award.
