On Your Mark! – Free diploma exam tutorial sessions for PWPSD students

January 09, 2019

Seven free diploma exam tutorial sessions will be offered to Peace Wapiti Public School Division (PWPSD) students in January, starting this weekend. There is no need to register – students should simply show up ready to review and ask questions. Lunch and snacks will be provided by PWPSD.

While the comprehensive six-hour tutorials, known throughout the division as 'On Your Mark!' sessions, are open to students enrolled at PWPSD high schools, Superintendent Bob Stewart notes that staff regularly receive calls from students from other school divisions. "We never turn them away. We offer them the same as we provide to our students – access to the tutorial sessions and free lunch and snacks."

"The one-day sessions provide structured time for students to focus on studying diploma course material," says Peace Wapiti Academy (PWA) Principal Wanda Gerard. "A concise overview of the curriculum is combined with opportunities for students to redefine concepts, receive clarification, complete sample questions, and be exposed to a variety of question types."

Six sessions will run during 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on three consecutive Saturdays in January. Social Studies 30-1 and 30-2 will be offered at PWA on January 12. Math 30-1 and 30-2 tutorials will be held at Grande Prairie Regional College (GPRC) on January 19, followed by Biology 30 and Chemistry 30 at GPRC on January 26. The final session, Science 30, will be held during the same timeframe on Tuesday, January 29 at PWA.

"The rigorous review helps students feel more confident in their understanding of concepts, eases their stress, and also helps them identify areas of focus that will enhance their additional studying and review leading up to the exams," adds Principal Gerard. "As a learning community, we extend our appreciation to the PWPSD high school teachers who facilitate the sessions, and give a huge shout-out to the participating students. We also thank GPRC for volunteering the use of their venue."
