School’s out for summer

June 28, 2018

Today marks the final day of classes for the 2017-2018 school year for approximately 6,000 students, more than 370 teachers, and 600 non-teaching staff in the 33 schools that make up Peace Wapiti Public School Division (PWPSD). Central Office in Grande Prairie will maintain regular office hours throughout the summer, with the exception of Friday afternoons during July 6 - August 10 when the office will be closed to the public.

For many students, the summer months can be a time when reading is set aside. To prevent summer slide – the loss of skills during summer months – families are encouraged to look for ways to incorporate literacy in activities during the break.

Students wishing to upgrade Diploma Exam and course results should contact PWPSD's Alternate Education Program. The program offers free high school courses to youth under the age of 20 as of September 1, and provides opportunities to study additional courses, meet post-secondary prerequisite requirements, complete Alberta High School Diploma requirements, or prepare for the General Educational Development (GED) exam.

Upcoming school year calendars
The first day of classes is Tuesday, September 4. Families may subscribe to PWPSD's online calendar at http://www.pwsd76.ab.ca/Calendar to receive alerts of important dates on their computer or mobile device. Families should also review a printable PDF of the 2018-2019 school year calendar, available at http://www.pwsd76.ab.ca/Resources/ParentResources/calendars, and be mindful of official school holidays when booking vacation time.

School supply lists, online registration, and school fees
Important back-to-school information will be posted under the 'Registration' tab on all PWPSD school websites, including links to school supply lists, online registration, and school fees.

Online registration for new students and the Returning Student Update Form
New families may access PWPSD's online registration at any time by clicking the 'Registration' tab on the PWPSD website and all school websites. In September, families of returning students will be emailed a Snap Code to complete the Returning Student Update Form to verify demographic information such as address, phone number and emergency contacts. Schools provide computer access to those who do not have Internet service.

Bus safety and e-notifications
In September, trained PWPSD busing representatives conduct free safety presentations at participating schools, including a safety talk and video, followed by safety drills. Wondering if your bus will be on time? Sign up for email notifications on the status of individual or multiple bus routes at http://transportation.pwsd76.ab.ca. Near the end of August, school bus drivers contact families to share pick-up times for the upcoming year.

Kindergarten start-up
Registered Kindergarten students and their parents may be scheduled for individualized meetings or orientation sessions during the first week of September. The meetings provide valuable insights into the type of programming required for first-time students and eases the transition for both parents and young children. Kindergarten start-up dates vary by school and are published under the 'Registration' tab on school websites.

PWPSD wishes all students, families and staff a safe and enjoyable summer!
