Grade 9 students explore trades at Eastlink Centre

March 14, 2018

A group of Grade 9 students from Sexsmith Secondary School learned there is a lot more to swimming than meets the eye when they toured the mechanical areas of the Eastlink Centre in Grande Prairie on March 14, 2018. Gordon Tait (pictured right), an electrician at the Eastlink Centre, and facilities worker Griffon Davis (pictured far right) provided students with an overview of how the electrical, plumbing and power engineering trades come into play in a recreational facility. Grade 9 students from Peace Wapiti Academy participated in the same tour later that day.

Students received behind-the-scenes access during the tour, including the basement area below the pools that houses the filters, surge tank, ultra violet lights, chemicals, pumps and motors responsible for the safe and smooth running of the facility's indoor water park.

Supported by CAREERS: The Next Generation, Explore the Trades is an innovative approach for students to gain firsthand experiences for consideration when charting their future educational and career paths. Trades featured on the tours are in high demand and provide an opportunity for students to talk with tradespeople on the job and learn about the trades and the steps required for certification.
