Welcome back to the 2017-2018 school year

August 30, 2017

With the first day of the 2017-2018 school year now less than one week away on Tuesday, September 5, Peace Wapiti Public School Division (PWSD) offers resources to help families transition from summer break immediately following the Labour Day holiday. Families are encouraged to visit school websites to view user-friendly school year calendars, school supply lists and school fees, and sign up for electronic newsletters and email notifications on the status of bus routes. Early in the school year, participating schools will offer bus safety demonstrations and personalized Kindergarten orientation sessions.

2017-2018 school year calendar
PWSD's printable school year calendar is available online at http://www.pwsd76.ab.ca/Resources/ParentResources/calendars. The calendar includes statutory holidays and professional development days. To facilitate blended high school and elementary busing at some schools, Compressed School Weeks (CSWs) are incorporated within the calendar to adjust for the difference in required instructional time. To compensate for the difference, some elementary schools receive a selection of Fridays off throughout the school year. The PWSD district calendar includes suggested CSW Days, but some elementary schools may adjust those dates to align with high school events occurring on a Friday, such as graduation. Families should visit the school website to access school-specific calendars.

School office reopening dates
Most school offices are now open and ready to accept fees payment and answer questions. For a list of office hours by school, visit http://bit.ly/BacktoSchool-2017.

School supplies and fees
To access school supply lists and fee information, click the 'Registration' tab on the school website. A list of all PWSD school websites is available at http://www.pwsd76.ab.ca/SchoolInfo

Online registration for new and transferring students; demographic review forms for returning students
To register a new student at a PWSD school, click the 'Register Online' link found at www.pwsd76.ab.ca, or on any school website. A second link will take users to the InfoSnap online registration form. Those who do not have access to a computer or the Internet, or experience issues with the online process, should contact the school office. A birth certificate and proof of residency are required for online and in-person registration. Students who attended a PWSD school or playschool last year, and who are returning to the same school this year, do not need to register – the school will provide an online link to review and correct existing demographic information, such as home address and emergency contacts. Students who are transferring from one PWSD school to another, other than from a feeder school to the accepting school, must complete the full online registration process.

Whispering Ridge Community School
Construction on the new Whispering Ridge Community School is at the halfway mark and on schedule for the planned mid-school year opening in January 2018. Approximately half of Harry Balfour School's students and teachers, sorted by class for the start of the school year, will make the move together to the new school. Updates on the project, answers to frequently asked questions, and the attendance boundary map for Harry Balfour School and Whispering Ridge Community School are available online at http://bit.ly/WRCS-PWSD.

A number of other summer construction projects underway throughout the Division will wrap up this week, including the addition of three modular classrooms at Bezanson School. Teepee Creek School's modernization project is nearing completion, with crews working to finish the final phases of landscaping and parking lot paving prior to the first day of school. Regular summer maintenance projects are winding down, along with larger projects at a number of schools, including upgrades to flooring, paving, roofing, and mechanical and electrical systems.

Kindergarten start-up
While Tuesday, September 5, 2017 marks the official first day of school, many PWSD schools vary Kindergarten start-up dates and/or schedule personalized orientation meetings with families to determine programming needs and ease the transition to school. For questions or concerns, please contact the school office. The chart below outlines the first official day of Kindergarten classes, by school.

Busing information
As of Tuesday, September 5, school zones will be in effect on school days. Drivers are reminded to exercise caution and adhere to posted speed limits. Drivers should also note that it is illegal to pass a school bus in rural areas when red lights are flashing.

Families should provide current daytime telephone numbers to their child's school office and PWSD's Transportation Office. Prior to the first day of school, PWSD bus drivers will be in touch with families to provide busing information. Students should plan to arrive at their bus stop five minutes early. In September, trained PWSD busing representatives will conduct free bus safety presentations at participating elementary schools.

Families can sign up for email notifications on the status of individual or multiple bus routes at http://transportation.pwsd76.ab.ca. Notifications of late and/or cancelled buses on individual routes are communicated via the email notification system, which may also be viewed on the Division website and all school websites by clicking the 'Bus Advisory' button. In the event of partial or Division-wide cancellations and emergencies, notifications will be posted on all available communication channels, including the Division and school websites, the Power Announcement telephone system, the bus route email notification system, and PWSD's social media outlets – Facebook and Twitter.

Follow PWSD on Facebook and Twitter
In the event of a server outage during an emergency, staff and families may access important notifications and updates by following PWSD's Facebook and Twitter feeds: https://www.facebook.com/PWSD76 and https://twitter.com/pwsd76. The majority of PWSD schools also host Facebook pages – to begin following today, click the Facebook icon found on individual school websites.

PWSD wishes all students, families and staff a happy and successful school year. Welcome back!
