Three Peace Wapiti Academy students advance to National Skills Canada Competition

May 18, 2017

Peace Wapiti Public School Division (PWSD) congratulates three Peace Wapiti Academy students who will advance to the National Skills Canada Competition in Winnipeg, Manitoba on May 31 - June 2, 2017, following gold medal wins at the Provincial Skills Canada Competition (PSCC) in Edmonton on May 10-11, 2017. Gold medalists from the provincial event formed Team Alberta, earning a place at the national event.

Grade 11 student Brandon Toews teamed up with Grade 12 student Morgan Embree for the PSCC gold medal win in the Robotics category.

"This whole experience has been surreal," says Brandon. "Having the opportunity to compete in an event such as Robotics is a gift on its own. Going to nationals is something I didn't expect, but I'm going to give it all that I've got to make my school proud."

His partner, Morgan, echoes similar thoughts. "I'm surprised with how well we've done and I'm happy that my school supports us in sending us to nationals."

Grade 11 student Jason Cote, who achieved silver in the Outdoor Power and Recreation Equipment category, will join the pair on the trip to nationals in Winnipeg after the gold medal winner ceded his spot on Team Alberta.

"I'm excited to apply the skills and knowledge I've learned over the years at a national competition in a trade I have a passion for," says Jason.

Congratulations are also extended to seven PWSD students for their strong showing at the PSCC event:

  • Jared Fehr, Grade 11, Sexsmith Secondary School – Cabinet Making
  • Landon Cook, Grade 12, Peace Wapiti Academy – Carpentry
  • Moriah Berg, Grade 11, Peace Wapiti Academy – Culinary Arts
  • Michaela Huber, Grade 12, Savanna School – Culinary Arts
