Election 2017 dates set – Be a leader in your community, become a school board trustee

May 03, 2017

Peace Wapiti Public School Division (PWSD) invites you to become a leader in your community by running for school board trusteeship in 2017. A person may be nominated as a candidate if, on nomination day, the person:

  • is eligible to vote in the election;
  • has been a resident of the local jurisdiction and the ward for the six consecutive months immediately preceding nomination day, and;
  • is not otherwise ineligible or disqualified.

These are general guidelines. Candidates should refer to the Local Authorities Election Act and the School Act for complete information, available on the Alberta Queen’s Printer website.

Nomination and election dates set
PWSD’s School Board nomination and election days coincide with the dates set for municipal elections.

Nomination Day is Monday, September 18, 2017. Completed nomination papers must be received between 10:00 a.m. and noon at either of PWSD’s offices:

  • Central Office, 8611A - 108th Street, Grande Prairie
  • Sub Office, 4201 - 50th Street, Spirit River

Election Day will be held on Monday, October 16. Polling station locations will be announced following Nomination Day.

New candidate information packages
Those interested in running for trusteeship may pick up the new candidate information package at any PWSD school office, Central Office in Grande Prairie, or the Sub Office in Spirit River. An electronic version is available online at www.pwsd76.ab.ca/election.

The new candidate package includes general information, the Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA) election brochure, Board work plan and meeting schedule for the upcoming school year, relevant PWSD policies, and ward boundary maps.

PWSD’s nine electoral wards
PWSD is divided into nine electoral wards that are represented by school trustees elected by the citizens of each ward. In 2017, the Board approved a bylaw to redefine boundaries impacted by annexation of County lands by the City of Grande Prairie. To view ward boundary maps, visit www.pwsd76.ab.ca/election.
