Peace Wapiti Public School Division (PWSD) is pleased to announce that Hythe Regional School (HRS) will host its first Orange Shirt Day event on Thursday, September 29, 2016.
The Orange Shirt Campaign – Every Child Matters remembers the experiences of former students of Indian Residential Schools and is a commitment to ongoing reconciliation in Canada. Originating in British Columbia, this is the third year the campaign will be running in BC and other parts of Canada, and the first coordinated effort to celebrate the campaign in Alberta.
The school will host a ceremony in the gymnasium, beginning at 12:45 p.m. The event will begin with a prayer in Cree and English, followed by a brief explanation of the significance of Orange Shirt Day and the Every Child Matters tree which was made by HRS students and staff. HRS FNMI Liaison Worker Barb Belcourt will acknowledge the elders in attendance, who are also residential school survivors. Mr. Wayne Drysdale, MLA for Grande Prairie-Wapiti, will bring greetings, followed by a round dance accompanied by local drummers, and closing remarks by Assistant Principal Holly Gould.
The Society for Safe and Caring Schools and Communities, a centre for knowledge that fosters effective networks and partnerships to improve the quality of life for all Alberta children, kicked off the campaign with an Orange Shirt Campaign logo design competition in May 2016, culminating with the official Orange Shirt Day on September 30, 2016. The campaign grew out of Phyllis Webstad's account of having her new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at the St. Joseph Mission in Williams Lake, BC. The awareness campaign is an opportunity to continue the discussion on all aspects of residential schools.
Families, community members, and local media are welcome to attend this event. All visitors must check in at the school office upon arrival.
