Fifteen minutes of fun – PWSD schools celebrate Family Literacy Day

January 26, 2016

In celebration of this year's annual Family Literacy Day event, a number of schools within Peace Wapiti Public School Division (PWSD) will engage in literacy-related activities. PWSD encourages families to celebrate the love of reading by participating in family-based literacy activities at home. Spending as little as 15 minutes per day on reading or other learning activities can dramatically improve a child's literacy skills.

Beaverlodge Elementary SchoolStudents may dress up as their favourite character during an assembly on Wednesday, January 27th, enjoy paired reading with popcorn in the gym, and play book bingo.
Bonanza SchoolParents, community members, family and friends are invited to celebrate Literacy Day starting at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 28th, followed by a month-end assembly hosted by the Grades 5 and 6 class at 2:35 p.m.
Clairmont Community SchoolThis week, the CCS school library has been transformed into Camp Read S'more – a wilderness campground filled with tents, camping chairs and bears. The campfire is lit and students will be using flashlights to read inside tents. Outside of the library, students will enjoy a daily dose of Dr. Seuss when special guests drop by each morning to read a book over the intercom. Hallways have been decorated with "rainbow words" for students to read as they walk throughout the school. Daily DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) time has been scheduled so that the whole school will be reading simultaneously. Teachers will swap classrooms to read their favourite picture book to another class, and school-wide buddy reading will be held in the gym. Students will work on a collaborative book project that will be showcased in the school library for the remainder of the school year. On Wednesday, students and staff may dress as their favourite book or character, and healthy reading snacks will be provided by the Foods class on Thursday.
