Shawn O’Shea appointed Principal of new school in Whispering Ridge

January 15, 2016

Peace Wapiti Public School Division (PWSD) is pleased to announce the appointment of Shawn O'Shea as Principal Designate of the new Kindergarten-Grade 8 school, to be located in Whispering Ridge subdivision. Mr. O'Shea will continue to serve as Principal of Clairmont Community School for the remainder of the current school year.

A native of the Grande Prairie area, Mr. O'Shea brings more than a decade of school administrative experience to the role. In addition to five years as Principal of Clairmont Community School, he also served as Principal of Woking School, and Assistant Principal at Peace Wapiti Academy. He holds a Master's degree in Administration and Leadership, combined with fourteen years of teaching experience ranging from Kindergarten to Grade 12. Prior to joining PWSD in 2006, he was employed by the Fort Vermillion School Division.

His strong background in building collaborative practices will be instrumental in laying the groundwork for the new school. Throughout his career, Mr. O'Shea has been involved in key projects, including High School Redesign, Collaborative Analysis of Student Learning, Comprehensive School Health, and Implementing Response to Intervention.

Bob Stewart, Assistant Superintendent at PWSD, describes opening a new school facility as "the career opportunity of a lifetime."

"Principal O'Shea has shown exemplary leadership skills during his time with PWSD. The new school community will benefit from his professional experience and his holistic, student-focused approach to education," adds Mr. Stewart.

"During the upcoming school year, Mr. O'Shea's primary roles will include building school culture and relationships with families as they transition to the new school, and hiring teaching staff and administrative support," adds Mr. Stewart. "He will also influence policy and procedures for the new school, and determine which option classes will be offered."

"It is also key to establish a school council very early in the process," adds Mr. Stewart. "Parents are the backbone of our schools. They are instrumental in creating a culture of support for student success, as well as personalizing a new school through fundraising initiatives for additional enhancements, such as playground equipment."

Opening a new school may include interpreting blueprints and managing purchasing processes to ensure all appropriate equipment is in place, including classroom and office furnishings and supplies, and gym equipment.

Principal O'Shea says he has been fortunate to have worked in amazing communities and schools, as both a teacher and an administrator. "I look forward to working with the community and the future students, parents and educators, to build a dynamic, community-focused school," adds Mr. O'Shea.

The new school is scheduled to open in September, 2017. The Board will announce the official name at their upcoming meeting on January 21st, selected from naming suggestions gathered through a community survey.
