During the month of November, Peace Wapiti Public School Division (PWSD) will be seeking input from students and residents of the Harry Balfour School attendance area on a name for the new Kindergarten-Grade 8 public school, to be located north of Grande Prairie in Whispering Ridge subdivision.
When the new school received Ministerial approval in September, a number of Trustees came forward to form a School Facility Partnership Committee. Along with providing input on the design of the new school and meeting the project requirements, the committee was also tasked with developing a name for the school.
"We feel community input is extremely important in the process of naming a new school," says Dana McIntosh, PWSD's Board Chair.
"The new school will be located in Whispering Ridge subdivision and will relieve some of the pressure felt at Harry Balfour School, an aging facility which experienced a significant increase in enrolment during the past school year," adds Ms. McIntosh. "The placement of a new school within a relatively new area can go a long way in building community pride. We feel an important first step in fostering this sense of ownership is to reach out to residents within the attendance boundary for input on the name."
Naming suggestions may be entered in a short survey found on PWSD's website at www.pwsd76.ab.ca, or on the Harry Balfour School website at www.pwsd76.ab.ca/schools/hb. If a suggested name includes a geographical area or the name of a person, participants are asked to include a short note on the significance of the name to the education community. For direct access to the survey, visit https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Name-That-School.
Signs and posters containing a QR code which can be scanned with a smartphone or other digital devices offer a quick link to the survey. Residents can look for signs and posters in high-visibility areas and businesses throughout the attendance boundary. The survey link is also included in Harry Balfour School's November newsletter, and will be shared on PWSD's Facebook and Twitter feeds.
In December, PWSD's School Facility Partnership Committee will review the naming submissions and provide the top three names to the Board for a final decision at the first Board Meeting of the New Year, scheduled for January 21, 2016.
