PWSD schools raise more than $58,000 through Terry Fox Run events

October 13, 2015

The last coin has been counted! Students throughout Peace Wapiti Public School Division (PWSD) have raised a whopping $58,789.80 for cancer research, a considerable increase over last year's $44,081.68.

Among the 14 schools that participated in Terry Fox School Run events this year, Harry Balfour School's 788 students showed a strong commitment to the cause, raising an impressive $16,324.50 for cancer research.

"The students of Harry Balfour School have done an amazing job in supporting cancer research, the Terry Fox Foundation and the spirit and legacy of Terry Fox," says Principal Darren Young. "We are extremely proud of our students."

Some schools ramped up the competition by issuing fun challenges to staff, students and other schools.

Principal Casey Brown and the 74 students at Teepee Creek School challenged Principal Julie Hynes and the 110 students at Rycroft School to raise $3,500 in honour of the 35th anniversary of the Terry Fox Run. When Teepee Creek School announced their final tally of $5,826, Rycroft School received an additional donation, resulting in a tie between the two schools. "We didn't expect that our small schools would raise a combined total of $11,652," said Principal Brown. "How impressive is that?"

As promised, Principal Lawrie McKeith and Assistant Principal Stacey Rorem of R. W. Zahara Public School in Sexsmith dyed their hair and dressed in the colours of the two top fundraising teams, purple and orange, when students exceeded their $3,500 goal, bringing in $4,300.

This year, students at Bezanson School participated in what was believed to be their inaugural Terry Fox School Run event. Students raised $2,046, more than quadrupling their modest $500 goal. As promised, Principal Barb Arend and teachers were "pied" by the top fundraising students.

In addition to a Terry Fox Run t-shirt prize, top fundraisers at Clairmont Community School were entered into a draw, and later this month, two students will be selected to act as Principal and Vice-Principal for a day. The Grades 4D students were named top fundraising class overall and awarded a pizza party. As a whole, the school raised $1,744.

Fundraising by students at Beaverlodge Elementary School resulted in $7,233 for cancer research; Beaverlodge Regional High School collected $2,000; Bonanza School raised $2,040; LaGlace School brought in $2,314.50; Peace Wapiti Academy raised $787.85; Savanna School exceeded their goal with a total of $1,791.25; Spirit River Regional Academy raised $1,232.70; and Wembley Elementary School brought in $5,324.
