Free weekend courses offer expanded credit options for students

February 27, 2015

Peace Wapiti Public School Division (PWSD) is developing a series of weekend courses, based on student interest. The free ‘One Credit Wonders’ weekend courses are open to all Grades 10-12 students throughout the Division and will be offered on several Saturdays throughout the remainder of school year.

“This is an excellent opportunity for students to pursue an area of interest, or ‘test drive’ a future career option,” says Kate Thon, Assistant Principal at Peace Wapiti Academy. “Upon successful completion of the one-day course and the required summary project, students will earn one credit toward their high school diplomas.”

Courses develop based on student interest and instructional resources and availability; there is no set schedule in place for the school year. For now, students will need to provide their own transportation to the host high school, but if interest grows, busing may be provided to northern students, departing from Spirit River Regional Academy.

In November, a one-credit course in Nature and Wellness encouraged students to explore the benefits of relationships between plants, animals, and the environment as applied to the health and wellness of people. Students created plans to modify public and personal spaces to enhance personal wellness using elements of nature, and reflected on the personal implications for wellness in relation to their environment.

An introductory course in Computer Aided Design (CAD) was offered at Peace Wapiti Academy in January. Participants developed basic knowledge and skills required to operate CAD software to produce two-dimensional drawings. At the end of the day, students walked away with one or more portfolio-ready drawings, one high school credit, and a new employable skill.

“Future course offerings will continue to be based on student interest,” says Bob Stewart, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction at PWSD. “‘One Credit Wonders’ is an example of transformational program delivery – open to evolution and change based on student input. We invite students from across the Division to submit course ideas to Peace Wapiti Academy’s CONNECT office for consideration.”

A course in Fashion Illustration will be offered at Peace Wapiti Academy on Saturday, February 28, from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Students will learn to sketch a croquis – a rough sketch of a model – and incorporate simple gestures and apply these skills to create fashion illustrations.

In May, St. John Ambulance will host a special two-day weekend course in First Aid at Peace Wapiti Academy, valued at two credits.

‘One Credit Wonders’ courses are free for PWSD’s senior high students, lunch is provided, and no prerequisite course is required. Students should contact Debbie Terceros at the CONNECT office at Peace Wapiti Academy to register for courses.
